Prayers

In Jesus’ name, I pray . . .

Because of God’s steadfast love, Christians everywhere pray for
themselves, for others, and for the world. We pray for those who
are ill and in need, for peace, and in thanksgiving for God’s
gifts and for our daily lives.

“Do not worry about anything; but in everything by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to
God.” (Philippians 4:6)

We invite you to pray with us. Please click on any of the prayers

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Amen

Prayer to Saint Michael the
Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle.

Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the
Devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,

and do thou,

O Prince of the heavenly hosts,

by the power of God,

thrust into hell Satan,

and all the evil spirits,

who prowl about the world

seeking the ruin of souls. Amen..

The Glory Be

Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning,

is now,

Amen.

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God,

the Father Almighty,

Creator of Heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord,

At the words that follow, up to and
including

the Virgin Mary, all bow.

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried;

He descended into hell;

on the third day he rose again from the dead;

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;

from there he will come to judge the living and the
dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and life everlasting. Amen.

The Angelus

The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary,

And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, etc.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord.

Be it done unto me according to thy word.

Hail Mary, etc.

And the Word was made flesh.

And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary, etc.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ

LET US PRAY

Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, They grace

into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of

Christ They Son was made known by the message of

an Angel, may by His Passion and Cross, be brought

to the glory of His resurrection: through the same

Christ Our Lord. Amen

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God,

the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only Begotten Son of God,

born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

At the words that follow, up to and
including

and became man, all bow.

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin
Mary,

and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

he suffered death and was buried,

and rose on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead

and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of
life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,

who has spoken through the Prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic
Church.

I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer for our Soldiers

Gracious God, I pray for our soldiers. Let your grace be
a protective shield, guarding them from harm and keeping them
close to your love and compassion. May I always remember that
they are the ones who face the horrors and dangers of war
first-hand. Help us honor them for their courage and care for
them when there is damage to their bodies or spirit. When they
are lonely and afraid, and long to be with those whom they love,
fill their hearts with the sure knowledge of your presence at all
times, in war and peace. Let them feel, O God, deep in their
hearts, that your love is always there—boundlessly,
unconditionally, and eternally. Amen.

Prayer for Loved Ones in Iraq

Gracious God, I ask that your hand of protection be on
all those who are serving in Iraq, especially ________________.
It is hard to endure the separation from the ones we love and our
hearts feel ragged with worry at times because of the danger they
might be in. While our hearts are filled with deep love, our love
alone cannot bring _______________ back to us safely. So, I pray
that you will do for them what we are unable to do. I pray also
that when they are troubled by fear, confusion, loneliness, and
doubt that you will wrap them in your embrace until the time of
turbulence has passed. May your love bring them peace and
strength and the certainty of knowing they are loved. I ask this
in your name. Amen.

Prayer for the Earth

Gracious God, we thank you for the earth, our home as we
journey through our human life. Its miracles are too many to
number, and its fragility too easy to dismiss. Help us honor and
revere its wonders so that we protect and care for it as we would
both a child —young and filled with possibility— and a beloved
elder, graced with wisdom gained through experience. Open our
eyes to behold its unseen blessings, unstop our ears to hear its
pain, and fill our heart with love for all that it so generously
gives. We ask this for the sake of your love.

Prayer for Chronic Pain

Gracious God, I feel, at times, as if the ache in my body
will never go away. I try to keep a positive attitude even in the
midst of this chronic pain, but there are times when I am so
weary that my spirit begins to feel as troubled as my body. A
wave of darkness settles over me and I wonder if there will ever
be any relief, any light emerging on the horizon. I do not know
why I am confronted with this thorn in my flesh, and I wish for
nothing more than to be released from it. I pray that your
healing will wash over me and bring peace to the frayed pockets
of my body that know no peace. I pray also that your great grace
will gather like gentle wind and restore my soul to joy and hope.
I ask this for the sake of your love. Amen.

Prayer for Learning to be Alone

Gracious God, help me learn to be graciously and
contentedly alone without being bowed down with the loneliness
that bites at and constricts my heart. Let the light of your
presence lead me on the path where I am able to see and know
those things that cannot be seen and known while in the company
of others. Let my alone-ness be the space of preparation that
makes me more truly present to the world of humanity around me. I
ask this for the sake of your love. Amen.

Prayer for Forgiveness of
Oneself

Gracious God, my heart is heavy with my own failures. I
try to excuse them and explain to myself why they occurred,
because I want to be free from the feeling that I am unworthy and
incapable of being all that I can be. But I find it easier to
accept your forgiveness than to forgive myself. When I try to
forgive myself, it seems I only remember and re-play my failures
in my mind, and a sense of hopelessness floods over me. Help me
to know that my past actions are a part of my growing humanity
and that even when I fail to live up to what is your will for me,
every single moment can be lived anew. Remind me that refusing to
forgive myself only keeps me from experiencing that newness.
Assure me of the truth that by casting “my sins into the depth of
the sea” (Micah 7:19b), you have freed me to discard them myself
and live the next moment as if it were my first—for indeed it is.
I ask this for the sake of your love. Amen.

Prayer for Dealing with Anger

Gracious God, sometimes anger seems so near to the
surface of my life. An unwelcome word, the remembrance of a past
hurt, a disappointment I had not expected, can make my emotions
swirl with the force of a small cyclone. Sometimes, my heart
feels hot, my nerves feel edgy, my mind feels like lit dynamite.
And sometimes, I just turn silent, go inward, cut myself off from
anything and anyone that could ease the throbbing inside. I hold
on to my anger, as if to let it go, would render the reason for
my anger meaningless. I pray that your great love will burn away
my anger and leave me settled in the cool breeze of your
presence. Help me let go, not only of the anger, but of what made
me angry in the first place. Let me breathe deep the wonder and
peace of love. Amen.

Prayer for Children

Gracious God, in the vulnerability of a child, we
recognize our own fragility. In their tender innocence, we are
reminded that life is meant to be lived with curious and joyful
abandon. Help us, who are no longer children, to retain the
freshness of childhood and to be the protectors and mentors of
those whose lives are just beginning. May we see in their eyes
the clear window of heaven. Guide us in the ways to keep all
children safe and in your great love, O Lord, hold them in your
peaceful embrace so they are not overcome by loneliness, fear, or
danger. We ask this for the sake of your love. Amen.

Prayer for Those Who are
Suffering

Gracious God, all around me people are suffering. When I
turn away from my own problems, I feel sorrow for the problems of
others. Through the news, the media, and my conversations, I am
daily confronted with the pain and suffering of so many innocent
people in my life and in the world. Suffering seems to eagerly
eat at the edges of life until people are worn down with sadness
and despair. Even though I do not understand the reasons for
suffering, I believe that you are a God of love, a God of
compassion. I pray that you will be with all those this day that
are in pain, who suffer silently and alone, who feel abandoned
and left by the side of life’s road. Wrap your arms of grace
around them, until they know they are safely held in your
embrace. And, I pray, that you will fill my heart with the same
compassion, and give me eyes to see how I can lovingly be a part
of their healing. I ask this for the sake of your great love.
Amen.

Prayer for Facing
Temptation

Gracious God, I so easily fall prey to patterns of
behavior that separate me from you and others. I want to do the
right thing, the good thing, the loving thing, but temptation
stalks the rim of my life like a prowling animal. Before I know
it, I’ve fallen into its grasp and begun the downward spiral into
what is less than full life. Help me, Lord, to see when
temptation is trying to cleverly captivate me. Give me the
strength and fortitude to make choices for health and spiritual
wholeness. Keep me faithful in my love for you and faithful to
the wonder of being given the gift of life. I ask this for the
sake of your love.

Prayer for Patience

Gracious God, it’s so hard to wait. To wait for new
things to happen in my life. To wait for you to answer my
prayers. To wait for the open doors that may lead me into a new
way of being. During the time of waiting, it seems that all I can
think of is having what it is I am waiting for. At times I feel
weary of asking and waiting, and I wonder if you really hear my
prayers at all, if you are ignoring me, or if you are simply
refusing to give me my heart’s desire. A part of me knows that
you want my best, and that your time is not my time, but Lord, it
is still so hard to wait. Deepen my trust, O Lord, during the
times when my heart longs for what can only come in the fullness
of time. Give me a calm assurance that your will for me is
grander than anything I could ever imagine. Still my mind and
heart in your love so that I am mindful of the grace you are
draping around me every single day, every single moment. I ask
this for the sake of your love.
